Avoid Root Cause Analysis: The Roles of System-Based Thinking in the Development and Implementation of Innovative Strategies
By Dr. Park Chan Hyung Senior Researcher at the Chair of Strategic Management and Innovation of ETH Zurich Friday January 10, 2025, 12:00pm. – 13:00pm. Venue: Room 201 at Sasin School of Management or online via Zoom Register here to reserve your seat Abstract: An essential task of central decision makers in firms is strategic problem solving. This process starts with problem formulation—theorizing about the potential, underlying causes of problems—to guide subsequent strategies. The conventional belief in strategy research is that the goal of problem formulation is to comprehensively identify potential causes, isolate root causes, and prioritize resources to solve them. In this paper, we challenge this belief by claiming that complex, strategic problems often cannot be decomposed to individual causes. Instead, we propose that a system-based understanding, based on identifying diverse individual causes and their interdependencies, would result in more innovative strategies. A field experiment and a longitudinal study of 296 decision makers of agriculture firms support our proposal.
