Sustainability of the family business through corporate governance, professionalization, and talent retention

24 Jun 2022
Good corporate governance is an essential ingredient for business. But in the context of a traditional family business, what does good corporate governance mean – what is it, and how can it be achieved? And how is doing so relevant to professionalizing the family business? As family businesses grow and expand through generations, how can they retain talent? Is there a glass ceiling for “outsider” employees in a particular family business, and if so, should businesses consider breaking it? We will examine the different ways in which family businesses may choose good corporate governance, professionalization, and talent retention; the common pitfalls and difficulties faced in doing so; and how succeeding will allow businesses to stay relevant into the future. This week we host keynote speaker Mr Francis Chan, Executive Director, Titanium Law Chambers LLC, who will speak on professionalization and talent retention for sustainability in Asian Family Businesses. Francis is the co-founder and Executive Director of Titanium Law Chambers LLC (TLC). He is a trained litigator and an employment law specialist. As the head of TLC’s employment law team, Francis advises clients of all levels ranging from SMEs to MNCs on employment-related matters and on Singapore’s labor regulatory framework. Francis also provides strategic advice to companies to ensure that their houses are in order – for example, by reviewing key employment documents such as contracts, handbooks, and incentive schemes; conducting training for top management and employees; and by conducting HR audits to identify areas of potential non-compliance. Francis also conducts internal investigations against employees for alleged misconduct; wrongful dismissal cases; and manpower restructuring and retrenchment exercises. Francis’s philosophy is that the employer-employee relationship should be approached from a human perspective. This creates a win-win situation for employers and employees to gain the most value out of their relationship while preventing costly disputes. In addition to his legal practice, Francis also teaches on the topic of employment law as an adjunct professor in both the Singapore Management University and Singapore University of Social Sciences.
