On November 9, 2021, Sasin Japan Center (SJC) co-organized a business webinar with Mitsubishi UFJ Research & Consulting (MURC), a research and consulting firm of Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, for over 200 executives from 170 companies. The webinar was supported by Thailand’s Bank of Ayudhya and MUFG Bank, the largest holding and financial services company in Japan. Professor Takamasa Fujioka, Director of Sasin Japan Center, offered a talk titled “Corporate Strategy and the Roles of the Executive in the Post COVID-19 Era: From environmental determinism to strategic choice”. Professor Fujioka discussed (1) how we should cope with COVID-19, (2) the roles of executives of Japanese companies in a globalized and information-oriented society and (3) a framework for business development in the post-COVID-19 era. According to Professor Fujioka, firms have long been viewed as systems that process information or solve problems from a passive and static view. This includes how efficiently a firm can deal with information and decisions in a stable environment. During his presentation, he emphasized that any firm that currently deals with an uncertain environment should not only process information efficiently but also create new information and knowledge. This discussion about a firm’s interaction with its environment is more important when it comes to enhancing an active and dynamic understanding of the firm in these difficult times.
