Making food sustainable

Sustainability is the buzz word in just about every sector these days and with the Sustainable Brands 2017 Bangkok (SB’17 Bangkok) conference slated to take place on November 29 and 30, its organisers recently collaborated with Sasin Centre for Sustainability Management (SCSM) in holding a luncheon talk dubbed “Redefining the Good Food”.

The aim was to share news and views from brand leaders and professionals and come up with recommendations that enhance sustainability in the food industry. These will be fed into the conceptual framework to be delivered at the upcoming conference.

 

 

Pipatpong Israsena Na Ayudhya, managing director of Doi Kham, and Vasit Taepaisitphongse, President of Betagro Group, were among the guests at the luncheon.

Pipatpong defined “good food” as “anything that gives the most health benefits to the consumer”. The Doi Kham Company is an experimental farm initiated by His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej with the objective of developing alternative income crops to improve the quality of life of hilltribe farmers

 

 

“At Doi Kham, the emphasis is on the importance of sustainable development in terms of quality of food. We are constantly innovating and developing premium and international standard products at reasonable prices,” he said.

“For example, our Doi Kham fruit juices should taste as same as when the fruit is freshly squeezed. The juice drink inside the packaging is exactly the same as the fruit image appearing on the label. The pricing is dependent on the seasonality of each fruit and we build on trust to ensure the sustainability of our business. Ultimately, we believe in the guidelines of His Majesty King Rama IX in creating sustainable developments.”

Vasit said good food relies on the commitment of the food producer and the decision-making of the consumer.

“These days, Betagro Group is not only the business leader in food and agricultural products in Thailand, but also the most trusted in terms of food safety and standardisation. Food is one of the four requisites of life and so Betagro focuses on this ‘quality of life’ principle as much as the importance of sustainability,” he noted.

 

 

“I feel fortunate to be in the food industry because this industry obliges professionals to do the right thing and that creates sustainability. If we set profit as the key to success, we might encounter unethical practices, which are dangerous. However, if we manage investment efficiently together with being ethical, the food industry can be sustainable.”

This year’s conference will see producers offer their views on “Redefining the Good Life” through Good Food, Good Home, Good Health-Care, Good Money, Good Design, Good Energy, Good Technology, and Good Destination.
