On December 21, 2023, Professor Dr. Takamasa Fujioka, Director of the Sasin Japan Center and Associate Dean of Meiji Professional Graduate School, was invited by the Japan Foundation to give two presentations at the special panel titled “Japan in Thailand: Interactions, Japanization, and Localization.” This panel session was supported by the Japan Foundation and the Institute of East Asia Studies (IEAS) at Thammasat University.
Professor Fujioka provided insights into the role of Japanese business sectors in shaping Japanization across Asia and the localization of Japanese influences in business sectors, highlighting the distinctive interactions in Thailand compared to other Asian countries. He referenced the case of SCG-Heim, which he has supported in its development.
This panel served as the main event of the 8th Japan-ASEAN Conference 2023, commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Japan-ASEAN Relations, hosted by Chiang Mai University in Chiang Mai. Other esteemed panelists included Professor Dr. Kitti Prasirtsuk (Faculty of Political Science, Thammasat University), Ms. Yuparet Eakturapakul (CEO of G-Yu Creative Co., Ltd.), and Emeritus Professor Dr. Tanet Charoenmuang. The moderator was Associate Professor Dr. Sunida Aroonpipat, Chair of the Japanese Studies Center at IEAS, Thammasat University.
The session was attended by over 150 international scholars, Mr. Keiichi Higuchi (Consul General of Japan in Chiang Mai), and Dr. Yuri Sato, Executive Vice President of the Japan Foundation.
