On June 8, 2023, the Sasin Japan Center (SJC) organized a seminar titled “Prospects of Japanese-Thai Family Business: Collaboration between Thai Family Businesses and Japanese Companies.” The event was conducted in collaboration with JETRO Bangkok and received support from Bangkok Bank. The seminar commenced with opening remarks from Professor Ian Fenwick, Director of the Sasin School of Management, and Mr. Junichiro Kuroda, President of JETRO Bangkok. Following that, Mr. Paron Israsena Na Ayudhya, Former CEO of Siam Cement Group and Former Director of Sasin, delivered a special speech, highlighting his career history and collaboration with Japanese firms like Toyota Motor.
The keynote speech was delivered by Professor Takamasa Fujioka, Director of the Sasin Japan Center and Professor at Meiji Business School. He provided insights into the impact of family businesses on the global economy, discussed the characteristics of family businesses in Thailand, and addressed future challenges. Mr. Hitoshi Ozawa, Executive Vice President of Bangkok Bank, shared his expertise on dealing with family businesses in Thailand. Mr. Hideyuki Kikuchi, President of Kikuwa, a first-tier auto parts supplier, spoke about the philosophy of family business and shared experiences in family group management in Japan, Thailand, and India, as well as technology development in collaboration with the University of Tokyo. Finally, Mr. Yasushi Odawara, President of Personnel Consultant, the largest recruitment agency in Thailand, discussed the changes in recruitment strategies of Japanese companies in Thailand over the past 30 years.
Around 270 participants from Japan and Thailand attended the seminar, with approximately 10% representing government agencies (Embassy of Japan, JETRO, JICA, JNTO, AOTS, Organization for Small & Medium Enterprises and Regional Innovation, JAPAN, NEDO, JAXA), financial institutions (Japan Finance Corporation, Mizuho Bank, Bank of Ayudhya, Bangkok Bank, Bank of Yokohama, Bank of Chiba, Bank of Hiroshima, AEON Thana Sinsap, etc.), and the media (Jiji Press, Bangkok Shuho, ArayZ, Tokyo Chunichi Shimbun, Nikkei, etc.). Additionally, numerous participants from the private sector, including Mitsubishi Corporation, Sumitomo Corporation, Marubeni, Idemitsu Kosan, Dai Nippon Printing, NEC, IHI, Toyota Tsusho, and others, were present.
