In an engaging session moderated by esteemed author, journalist, and human rights practitioner, Salil Tripathi, Dr. Drew B. Mallory joined Midnight Poonkasetwattana (Executive Director, APCOM) to discuss the complexities of localizing inclusion initiatives, including those for LGBTQI+ people, in resistant contexts. Dr. Mallory emphasized the importance of:
Adapting DEI to Local Contexts
Speaking to Human Rights Defenders, Dr. Drew argued that rather than applying Western DEI models universally, advocates must tailor approaches that reflect the cultural realities and unique needs of local communities. This ensures that diversity, equity, and inclusion are meaningful and sustainable on the ground.
Collaboration with Local Leaders
Recognizing the role of local activists and identity holders, both Dr. Drew and Midnight encouraged human rights defenders to lean on local expertise, focusing on collaboration to create solutions that resonate within communities—especially where formal protections may not exist.
Intersectionality and Representation
Dr. Drew also urged defenders to remain mindful of their own positions as outsiders and to avoid imposing external perspectives. Using the LGBTQI+ Inclusion Toolkit developed by Sasin, UNDP, and Workplace Pride as a practical example, Dr. Drew emphasized how leaders in powerful positions should only advocate for LGBTQI+ or other groups by working with those groups, their allies, and their antagonists directly.
The session took place at the 6th UN Responsible Business and Human Rights Forum under the theme ‘The Remedy Blueprint: Bridging Gaps and Accelerating Access” in Bangkok, where the focus is on building inclusive global frameworks for human rights advocacy. As the first higher education institution in Thailand to have a comprehensive inclusion policy, Sasin School of Management is committed to promoting the inclusion of marginalized groups in both education and the business pipeline. Sasin is excited that Dr. Drew was able to advance this conversation on inclusive business and education during the session.
