Imagine a community of super learners and T-shaped individuals coming together in one place to share thought-provoking conversations and innovative ideas. Sasin Executive Education brought this vision to life by hosting the “Meet the Demystified Faculty” Networking Session on November 20. This event marked the creation of the Demystified Community, or “D-Com,” a space where curious minds connect, collaborate, and inspire one another.
Roy Tomizawa, Chief Executive of Sasin Executive Education and instructor of Critical Thinking Demystified, opened the floor for discussion as he talked about T-shaped individuals, deeply curious people with an expertise in one area and a broad range of interests. “They could be a software engineer, but also have interests in African cuisine or grunge bands,” he explained. Inspired by his time at Microsoft as a People and Organizational Capability Director, where lunchtime conversations could range from Pokémon cards to the debt crisis in New York or Egyptian architecture, he hopes to recreate that dynamic and diverse exchange of ideas at Sasin.
This was the first time Demystified alumni, prospective students, and curious learners gathered at the “Meet the Demystified Faculty” Networking Session held at Sasin. Attendees had the opportunity to meet the instructors and get a sneak peek into the courses they offer.
The Demystified short course is part of Sasin’s Executive Education where leading managers and entrepreneurs can learn about different subject areas in 12-14 hours. One of the most popular courses is Stock Market Investing Demystified and Finance Demystified, taught by Dr. Andrew Stotz, CEO of A. Stotz Investment and Visiting Professor at Sasin School of Management.
“Pretty much all the topics that I teach like Valuation Master Class, I’ve brought down to 12 hours, so this Demystified course is providing the basic foundation just enough so that they can apply it into their business,” said Dr. Stotz.
People who are interested in self-development or leadership can enroll in Nikon Gormley’s Mental Performance Demystified and Coaching for Leaders Demystified course. Nikon, a Bangkok-based Transformative Coach, Speaker, and Taekwondo Master, talked about how people can grow their roots by getting to know themselves better.
“In leadership or growth, most people focus on how do I grow bigger and taller and they’ll focus on skills and maybe tips and tricks, and the truth is, if the tree is only big but the roots are not strong, and the wind blows, the trees will fall,” said Nikon. He added that by slowing down and getting to know themselves, leaders can achieve clarity of mind, which helps elevate their performance in life and in their organizations.
Another highly sought-after topic, AI & Business, is taught by Dr. Pinnaree Tea-makorn, Sasin’s AI Strategist and Founder of Sasin Data Analytics Center. She emphasized her role as an educator in showcasing the benefits and potential of AI while guiding students on its practical applications and the importance of using it cautiously.
“The challenge is that they have AI assistive tools, which makes it easier to learn, but at the same time if you’re not learning you could risk being hampered from these tools, where if you passively rely on these tools too much you might lose your muscles in critical thinking and analytical skills,” said Dr. Pinnaree.
In addition to the courses mentioned, Geert-Jan ‘GJ’ van der Zanden, Coach and Advisor of The Sustainability Transition Studio, teaches Sustainable Strategy Demystified. He guides participants in mastering systems thinking, helping them understand how their decisions impact interconnected systems. By focusing on the human element within systems, he encourages individuals to make more mindful and impactful decisions. Following this, Jacob Holder, Managing Director of Mobius, brings his expertise in strategic communication with a new Demystified course. His course focuses on honing confident communicators with the ability to deliver concise and precise messages to achieve personal and organizational objectives effectively.
Demystified alumni Eukkrit Kraikosol, Director of Leka Studio, who took Dr. Andrew Stotz’s Demystified Course, shared that he has applied what he learned to his business.
“Professor Andrew provided a lot of knowledge in the lessons, they are very practical and you can always bring it back and replan your strategy in your business,” said Eukkrit.
Another Demystified alumni, Arm Jamjareekul, System Custodian of UOB, found the investment class particularly beneficial, as his background is in IT, but he is eager to expand his knowledge in investing and finance. Describing his experience, he remarked, “Sasin is like a big wall; if I can break through it, my career path will flourish.” Inspired by the Demystified courses, he is now planning to enroll in a degree program at Sasin.
As Tomizawa stated, Demystified learners will grow and become leaders in their organizations, driven by a growth mindset and a commitment to lifelong learning. The Demystified Community (D-Com) is the beginning of where Thailand can cultivate super learners and T-shaped personalities in the most convenient location: Thailand’s premier business school, Sasin.
