With the tagline “It’s not football, it’s LaLiga”, the top men’s professional football league in Spain, also known as LaLiga, has significantly expanded its global reach and market in recent years. This webinar will explore the process and approach that LaLiga took to become a major global brand. The leaders of LaLiga realized that growing the LaLiga brand meant growing the business. During the 2014-15 season, 1.2 billion fans watched LaLiga matches worldwide. By the 2018-19 season, this number had more than doubled to 2.7 billion. The number of sponsorships has also increased dramatically from only five sponsors about seven seasons ago, to over 60 title, global, national, and regional sponsors today. LaLiga is not just competing against competitors in the same industry – the English Premier League, the German Bundesliga, or Italy’s Serie A – but also against major global brands such as Netflix, Fortnite, HBO, Formula 1, NBA, and many others. Even though LaLiga’s logo is more or less the same as a decade ago, a lot has changed. Ten years ago, LaLiga’s strategy focused on ‘being the best football league in the world’, while today the focus goes well beyond ‘just’ football.
